Lodge Foundation

The Historic Eagle Lodge Foundation Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation created in 2005 to help protect, maintain, preserve and restore the building and grounds of Eagle Lodge #19 AF&AM in Hillsborough, NC.

Eagle Lodge, founded in 1791, is one of the first Masonic lodges chartered under the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. Members of Eagle Lodge helped lay the cornerstone of Old East at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1793 in a ceremony that marked the birth of public higher education in the United States.

Our 1823 Greek Revival building was designed by state architect William Nichols and built by John Berry, a member of the lodge. The building has served as an opera house, meeting hall, Civil War hospital and observatory for Burwell School students. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tax deductible gifts to the foundation have paid for roofing, gutters, brick and mortar repairs, electrical upgrades and other needs identified by a licensed building inspector.

Gifts help us stabilize the building and keep it open and available to the community for events such as monthly programs sponsored by the Hillsborough Arts Council.

All gifts are appreciated and every gift will be acknowledged.

Gifts may be sent to:
